Log Crane & Flat Car kit Reviewed
A 3 page article is just out in the Light Iron Digest, Issue #54 2009. Bob Veefkind built our HO scale Slide Back Load Jammer Log crane and our 36' HOn3 flatcar. Bob did a thorough job detailing the construction, and there are plenty of pictures illustrating the fine job he did! He made some modifications to the kit as supplied which made the result truer to prototype.

Our Slide Back Load Jammer Log Crane & Flatcar kit is inspired from the prototype which is depicted in these photographs from 1929. Owned and operated by the Hallack & Howard Lumber Co. it is shown working along Horsethief Creek in southwestern Idaho in the Payette Valley.
Hallack & Howard Lumber Co. was founded in 1877 and sold to Boise Cascade in 1960. Headquartered in Denver, they operated mills in Idaho, Colorado & New Mexico. They owned locomotives & rolling stock, and the longest spur track on the Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge ran from the D&RGW main line west of Taos, west to the H&H La Madiera Mill.
Julie's grandfather Burt Coldren was president & treasurer of H&H, and her father, Fred Coldren, traveled throughout the region, marketing lumber to retail lumberyards, as well as making life hazardous for the local brook trout.

The Log Crane
Our Slide Back Loader Log Crane is modeled from the dimensions measured from the historical photographs. Code 40 rail is provided for shoeing the skids as well as for the vertical cab brace on each rear side. The boiler & steam engines are fully plumbed with scale valves. The only departure from the prototype is our leaving off several side planks so as to better view the donkey boiler & winch detail. The cab is a friction fit, so the side planks could be added, and still have the means to view the details.
| The Flat Car
Fully detailed including complete brake gear, queen posts, truss rods, stirrup steps & NBWs. Castings are by Grandt Line & Precision Scale, with trucks & couplers by Kadee included. The prototype in the photo is lettered Union Pacific. We lettered our model "The Hallack & Howard Lumber Co." using Copperplate Gothic font. We have a 1927 letter by H&H, and they used this font in their letterhead.

Construction is board-by-board. Only by using individual wood can realistic appearance be achieved with wood to be stained or weathered. It really doesn't take that much longer when the total time of the project is considered, and the dramatic results as illustrated in AMK models attest to the superiority over laser cut parts and sheet siding.
